How to get good at things

I always thought how were people so good at what they did. So ideally i did what i most people used to do, google. Reading success stories, watching motivational content, just consuming. So now i had an overview that how they got there, not a complete picture but a fuzzy one. You could say it was still in the red room.

So what was next? Hammer people about advices, ask how much time did it took for them to reach there. These questions were stupid in nuances but they were important for me. I had to know, the how, the why and then when? I just had to know.

By going down into the rabbit hole, all i got was this. A fact everyone knows and is common on the net at this point, just start.

BUT START WHERE? What is the ideal route to this and people would again say, just start. The good ol' nike motto, just do it.

Let me tell you something about myself, like the millions of people on the net i suffer from shiny object syndrome, the impostor syndrome and the ofcourse the most goated, perfectionism but at the end of the day these are just excuses to not do things because starting is hard and sticking to it when things get tough is much harder. You need to be persistent enough and stick to it in the long run to see any tangible results just like anything in life.

I can go on and on and give a sermon on this, but you are not here for this. So i am gonna give you tangible actions to do get good at things and believe me they work, if they didnt you can come abuse me at your earnest but you gotta promise me first that you will apply and do these things.

  1. action begets action : Momentum can make or break you, and doing nothing, daydreaming and planning the best route to take works against you. Take action daily and build over it, and soon you will propel yourself.

  2. Give yourself the leniency to not know everything : Even if you are really good at something, somedays you would just be blank. Dont be scared to appear dumb and ask for help. Cut yourself some slack, learn on the way and apply what you learn and still you can fail, but just try again.

  3. There isnt a one perfect route, just the one you start out with: pretty self explanatory, ties in with just start today and adapt, and figure stuff out. You can always ask people to help you, they are more than ready to do it because hey everyone one of them was a beginner.

NOW some practicality :

When you started to learn to ride a bicycle, you sucked at it but now when you ride it, its easy for you. Many things in life are like that. You just have to iterate over and over while optimizing (lol - lately optimizing life ) for the errors you had. You learn slowly , because taking the time to slow down is the key to get better because you are forced to absorb everything, and the more you do it, the faster you get. ( eg : touch typing ).

Iterate 10,000 times to get better while optimizing for your errors.

This blog is my trying to write stuff out, be more articulate and better with words and how i convey my ideas because I suck at interviews. See the correlation as : Everything at the end of the day is a skill and everything can be learned and the more you get good at things, they carry over to different aspects of your life, giving you the ability to learn better and faster.

I am just a beginner at stuff tinkering and trying to do things with more efficiency and most importantly, doing it for the sake of it, because i love learning new things. So:

Create more, consume less.

So essentially how do you get good things ? You dont. Paradoxical right? Life is a paradox. You get good at being putting in the time, taking action daily, showing up and putting yourself out there, so that when you have done this year in year out. You will be asking yourself, What do i learn next ?

Be curious, let yourself get bored to get to the nuance and in depth of things.

Just Start.
